Bartlett & West builds culture of investment and respect
Beth Valdivia is a project manager I for the Construction Services Group – Architecture at Bartlett & West. She started her career at the company about four years ago.
We talked with Beth about how a collaborative work environment has helped her grow, how the company’s investment in professional development pays off for years, and why she feels valued and respected in her role.
Tell me about a project you've worked on that made you proud to be part of the Bartlett & West team?
One project that stands out to me is an office building that houses multiple social and community services.
Not only are we focused on the client, but we’re focused on the people who are involved in treatment as well. They have some clientele who need a little bit more privacy and security around them. The building is located on a very busy street, so it was important for the entry to be shielded from the street view to allow the visitors to feel comfortable entering.
Another unique aspect of that project was that Bartlett & West provided all services in house. We worked with Bartlett & West Construction and were offered all disciplines: civil, landscape architecture, architecture, mechanical, electrical, plumbing.
We were able to give the client one contact to handle all the things they needed.
How has Bartlett & West invested in you and your team?
Bartlett & West puts such an emphasis on employee development which helps employee-owners take ownership in their role, in how their development happens, in their growth.
The company really supports individuals and encourages them to develop in the way that aligns with their individual goals. This helps them become more secure in their position and feel better as an employee-owner themselves. (Hear more from Beth about how Bartlett & West invests in employee-owners.)
What advice would you give to somebody considering a career at Bartlett & West?
We are a great collaborative company. We have a lot of different disciplines who work together so well. Although I've only been here four years, I've been in my career for 15 years, and having all disciplines in-house has been a benefit that I didn't know was there.
The focus on collaboration and individual development has been a great growth point for me, and it's helped in building my understanding of how our industry works.
What makes Bartlett & West stand out as a place to work?
I've rarely felt as valued and respected in a position as I am here. You are asked for your expertise, and they listen; it's been refreshing.
Another company focus I appreciate is cultural fit. We want this position to be just as much a fit for someone coming in as it is for us.
